Happy International Day of Light!

Happy International Day of Light!  @idl2020
Mooch should have been hosting a public event in #Ramsgate today, the 16th May, which is the day we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. Of course, the global Covid 19 pandemic has changed many plans for the IDL community, for whom this is usually a different kind of global event, one of celebration and innovation.

Our IDL event, entitled “The Light Beneath the Waves”, is a project that merges History, Art and Science. It is a collaboration with the Applied Optics Group at the University of Kent @AOGKent and Project Motorhouse @pmhisolate which explores the lighting element of the proposed new version of the temporary 2016 public art installation in Ramsgate, PERFUGIUM MISERIS. The Uni. outreach project will engage local schoolchildren and residents in exploring the science of light via this iconic artwork. We aim to schedule our event for later this year but for now check out the Uni.’s podcast about our wonderful  #PerfugiumMiseris collaboration.

Site survey for PERFUGIUM MISERIS

Yesterday saw our first proper survey of the landing stage on the Eastern harbour arm in Ramsgate and what an extraordinary place it is. Originally built in the 1940’s, ferries would moor here and passengers disembark to continue their journeys. There are parts of the structure that are eroding but the section we intend to work on is in surprisingly good condition. Thanks to the Thanet District Council Harbour Engineer, Lee Beaumont for leading the access and thanks also to Ivan del Renzio from Del Renzio and Del Renzio Architects and James Wright from Considine Civil and Structural Engineers for their input and expertise. Dan Whitehead from Roar video kindly recorded our investigation of this site that has not been accessed for years. Watch this space…

Mooch is the next exhibitor at Archive in October
Ship swallower poster in frame A5.jpg

Archive Cafe and Homestore in Ramsgate has been hosting experimental art installations for a year now on the last Friday of the month for only two hours. Some fascinating and challenging projects have come out of this initiative. Mooch is one of the founder members of The Meridian 5.41 group that organise this programme and it is Mooch’s turn for a solo show.

The Ship Swallower installation is a continuation of the exploration of the effect of the Goodwin Sands on Ramsgate, previously considered in the Mooch projects PERFUGIUM MISERIS, Worse Things Happen at Sea and the installation as part of the group show Voyaging in July 2019. The Archive show will feature the Morse soundtrack developed by Nick de Carlo for the Worse Things project. Come and join us for a drink at Archive, CT11 9LG, Friday 25th October from 7-9pm.

Worse Things Happen at Sea

Thank you to the Port of Ramsgate office who have allowed this sonic installation to go back into the Ramsgate lighthouse for the foreseeable. The Morse code artwork is on the Western harbour arm, Ramsgate CT11 9LQ, from 10am to 10pm every day. Do go and enjoy while it is still there.

New Mooch website

Hello friends, welcome to the new Mooch website, it’s been the typical experience of pulling teeth, and it’s not over yet, but hopefully we will have something that is more user friendly and easy to navigate. There will be tweaks and additions over the coming period so please bear with us. In any case, helpful suggestions will be welcome via the contact page.
