Hither Green Train Station Nature Reserve

In 2011 Mooch was commissioned by Network Rail to consider the triangle of green space between the train tracks at Hither Green station in South London. This space was a wildlife haven and passengers waiting on the platform had a perfect viewpoint into this habitat.

Consultation began with the Ecological Regeneration Manager at Lewisham Council and the Network Rail team to identify the species that occupied the triangle and consider ways to draw attention to the diverse residents of this space. The Hither Green Management Plan, compiled by the Creekside Centre in 2007, mentioned that “ It was recognised as a site of nature conservation importance in Lewisham in the eighties” , it was now owned by Network Rail but managed with assistance from Lewisham Council.

Once the principal species had been identified, Mooch commissioned illustrator Melanie Bernor who created beautiful sketches of each specimen and designer Chris Constantine created the layout for a sign to go on the edge of the platform.

A number of ideas were also sketched out to celebrate and highlight the fauna in the triangle, such as the glow in the dark foxes, which would make you aware of their habitat at night and invite you to observe the 2 worlds alongside each other.
